Big Portion of Trucking Not in a Rush to Beat ELD Mandate Deadline

by: prepassnow

A new infographic shows that much of the trucking industry isn’t ready for the electronic logging device mandate that goes into effect for many drivers and fleets on December 18, and the reasons may surprise you.

Nearly one out of every two fleet respondents and drivers/owner-operators surveyed in an online PrePass survey indicated they have yet to select and install an ELD. More than 250 devices are currently self-certified and listed on the FMCSA website.

Just a third of those surveyed said they have selected and installed an ELD. A little less than a fifth said they have made a selection but have yet to install them.

The poll also revealed that some trucking professionals are more prepared for the ELD mandate than others. Over half of the respondents identifying their position as fleet managers report having ELD devices installed and operational, compared to just about a quarter of drivers/owner-operators.

The poll also showed that of those who haven’t installed an ELD, a little more than two-thirds do not plan to meet the December 18 deadline. A quarter of this group said they don’t believe the ELD mandate will happen, while a slightly bigger number said they have no plans to install an ELD at all.

Another likely reason so many have put off selecting an ELD may be the belief that the devices are costly. The poll showed nearly one out of every two people said low cost was an important factor in selecting an ELD while of those who have yet to select an ELD provider almost a quarter claimed their reason for doing so is they believe the cost is too high.
